Spam in Any Flavor is Still Spam
I’m assuming that if you’re in business it is at least in part to make money. Maybe I’m unusual, but I don’t think so unless it might be the depth of my aversion to the things I’m about to mention. There are certain things you can do that virtually insure that I will never do business with you. Some things should be obvious; others may not be. Here they are in no particular order.
Send me paper mail. Granted, spam came to mean what it does today by way of the Internet, but the concept holds. I don’t want it. It carries an indirect cost to me. I would be curious to know how much landfill space is occupied by junk mail. I know that we haul out several heavy bags a year full of nothing but junk mail to be recycled, and we don’t sign up for any of it. You put a burden on us to deal with it and increase the cost of garbage collection. I won’t give you any of my money if I can help it. I haven’t done this since I got married because Linda usually sorts the mail, but I used to keep a spreadsheet of companies who sent me mail so that I would not inadvertently do business with them. I have recently read that the post office in an effort to stay afloat has sweetened the deal for direct mail marketers. I wish there was a way to opt out of the post office entirely.
Hang something on my door. I am uniquely able to completely ignore you’re advertising in this way since I don’t see well. I won’t even catch the big letters with a glance. It goes straight to the trash without ever being seen. You’re wasting both your money and mine for the reasons mentioned in the junk mail rant. I would like to put a paper shredder in the door with a glass front and a message, “insert flyers here.”
Send me email. This one’s obvious, being the official definition of spam, but all related forms also qualify. Examples include posting on forums, commenting on my blog, etc. Especially annoying are those of you who use the public comment form on my web sites. We both know that is not what the form is for. There is no way I will do business with you.
Finally, my latest pet peeve, follow me on Twitter. I’m not the least bit interested in giving you free advertising space because you show up on my profile and I absolutely will not follow you back. In fact, I’m as likely as not to report you for spam. I’ve let a few sneak by because they are not selling something and I like what they’re about, but I think this is a pretty lame way of getting your name out. I have not followed any of you in return nor am I likely to. Friends are welcome as are people actually interested by some miracle in what I have to say. Why tweet at all if you don’t want followers? There is a difference between followers and freeloaders. I won’t go into the more obvious forms of Twitter spam. Those are easily identified.
I’m done ranting now. I will engage in a bit of hopefully polite self-promotion now and ask that if you agree with me pass this around. I suspect a lot of these people have read some misguided book or article that tells them they should do this kind of thing. I also realize that there are always a certain number of people who will respond and since the cost of shoveling it out is minimal it probably isn’t going anywhere, but I can dream.
And by the way, don’t call me. I’ll call you.

Now I Know
I got the email saying that Twitter was changing the way applications connect to it, and even before the deadline our church site stopped feeding Twitter or Facebook. I finally investigated for the blog and once i updated the plugin it took me through all the steps to fix things up. This post is mostly to test that. I don’t know what I’m going to do for the church site. I haven’t seen an update to the package I used to hook that up and the last update I tried didn’t work. I may need to look for another one. It’s a rather overcomplicated process to get the connection going now. It seems silly to request an application just to set up a connection from a blog, but I do give them credit for trying to thwart lowlifes using Twitter to spread viruses. Thanks also to the maker of Twitter Tools for the step-by-step instructions right in the setup. It’s a well done plugin.
Christian Twitter?
I guess it had to happen sooner or later. We’ve got Christian everything else. From music to coffee houses to web portals, you can create for yourself a comfy Christian bubble and if you manage to find a job with a “Christian company” you never need set foot in this nasty old world. I admit, I get tired of the constant barrage of filthy spam hitting my inbox. Twitter has had a major problem with spammers following it’s members just to get clicks. If you have children I can understand wanting to find safe places for them to be.
I don’t patronize these sites for the same reason I don’t spend time on similar sites for people who are blind. I don’t want to be limited to a usually inferior platform with a limited user base. The social networking venue in particular works better the more people are using it.
I think it also runs contrary to our mission as Christians to set up our own little domains where we never have to interact with anyone who isn’t like us. Jesus modeled the exact opposite. He sent us out into the world. How can we share the good news if the only people we ever interact with are other Christians. So I may yet dump my Twitter account if they can’t keep a lid on the bad guys but not so I can retreat to some third rate online ghetto where no one else wants to go.
Is chirp the new tweet? (OneNewsNow.com)
A new website has been created for people who like to ‘tweet’ but are upset with unwanted twitter. ChristianChirp.com was launched last week by web guru James Paris.James Paris

Antisocial Networks
I’m always a little suspicious of stories like this. I always wonder what the rest of the story is. On the other hand, I can’t really say I doubt this happened exactly as stated. That’s why I decided to post it this way. Insert grain of salt here and then do as you feel necessary. I hate to say it, but I think it is probably only a matter of time before the same kind of thing happens with Facebook if it hasn’t already. It’s the world we live in. Nevertheless I am disinclined to increase my usage of Twitter after reading this. It is for me primarily a tool to more effectively keep my Facebook profile up to date anyway. The extra exposure is just a bonus and is devalued by having to put up with all the spam followers.
James L. Paris’ Christian News and Politics: Banned From Twitter For Supporting Rush Limbaugh
Well, I guess I know how Rush Limbaugh feels. This week I posted a blog piece supporting Rush and I received thousands of visits to my blog. I also engaged in probably one hundred ‘debates’ with people on Twitter about the whole Rush Limbaugh/NFL controversy. Today, I received the below message that I have been suspended from Twitter for one week. Obviously, someone did not like what I was saying in support of Rush. You will notice that my blog article was ‘re-tweeted’ 150 times by those that read it (not by me). I guess I am making some liberal at Twitter upset. Let’s make them really mad, please click on the “tweeted” button above and that will bring even more attention to this issue on their own network.
